News: PC wants filtering software to stop porn access in schools, libraries
TORONTO - A Progressive Conservative member of the legislature wants the province to take steps so people using computers in libraries and public schools cannot access pornography online.
Gerry Martiniuk has a private member's bill that would force libraries and schools to install Internet filtering software to block pornographic websites.
The Cambridge MPP says it's unrealistic to expect library or school staff to constantly monitor the sites accessed by their computers, so filters are needed to protect people, especially children.
He says some schools and libraries already have such filters, but he wants them all to have it so the policy is uniform right across Ontario.
Martiniuk already has the support of cyber safety expert Rob Nickel, a former OPP officer who witnessed a man downloading porn at the Cambridge Library.
He says Netsweeper, an Ontario-based company, helps provide safe access to school and library computers around the world and should be used across the province.
