Algeria has a data protection law known as Law Nr 18-07, which was enacted on June 10, 2018. This law addresses the processing of personal data and sets out conditions for various data-related activities.
Collection and Processing: The law defines the conditions for collecting, recording, organizing, storing, modifying, transmitting, and erasing personal data.
Scope: It applies to information related to identified or identifiable individuals, including elements specific to their identity (e.g., physical, physiological, genetic, biometric, economic, cultural, or social).
Data Protection Authority: The National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data is responsible for overseeing compliance with the law. However, as of now (February 2021), the authority is not formally established.
Sanctions: Infringements can result in administrative sanctions (warnings, fines up to DZD 500,000) or criminal penalties (imprisonment and fines)
