The First Day Back Is Not a Fresh Start for Everyone 

New timetables, new teachers, new expectations. For many students, the return to school brings genuine excitement. For others, it brings a familiar tightening in the chest. 

What has changed in recent years is that the pressures of school no longer switch off at 3:30 p.m. A student who feels behind in math, left out of a group chat, or targeted in a comment thread carries all of it home, then back again the next morning. The classroom and the phone screen have become one continuous environment. 

That reality has significant implications for how schools think about safeguarding. Student safety is no longer only about supervision in corridors and playgrounds. It also includes the digital spaces where students learn, socialize, and sometimes struggle. 

Five Pressures Students Bring Back to the Classroom 

1. Academic Pressure and Performance Anxiety 

Academic stress is one of the most consistent sources of distress among school-aged students. Returning to school often means confronting it all at once. 

  • Fear of falling behind after a break in routine 
  • High-stakes assessments and university or college admissions pressure 
  • Perfectionism reinforced by constant visibility of grades through online portals 
  • The “always available” expectation created by digital homework platforms and late-night notifications 
  • Comparison with peers whose achievements are now broadcast publicly 

Learning management systems and grade portals are useful tools, but they can also remove the natural pauses that once existed between school days. 

2. Social Media and the Comparison Loop 

Social platforms are where friendships are maintained, but they are also where social hierarchies are made visible and permanent. 

  • Curated comparison: Students measure ordinary days against edited highlight reels. A review of 83 studies involving more than 55,000 participants found a moderate association between social media comparison and body image concerns.
  • Social metrics: Likes, views, and follower counts become proxies for belonging. In a study of 245 adolescents, greater importance placed on likes was associated with greater body dissatisfaction and restrictive eating attitudes.
  • Exclusion made visible: Seeing a gathering they were not invited to, in real time 
  • Algorithmic reinforcement: Content about body image, appearance, or self-worth can be served repeatedly once a student engages with it 

3. Cyberbullying That Follows Students Home 

Traditional bullying had physical boundaries. Cyberbullying does not. 

  • It can continue overnight, on weekends, and during holidays 
  • It is often invisible to adults, occurring in private messages or closed groups 
  • Content can be screenshotted, shared, and resurfaced long after an incident 
  • Anonymity can lower inhibitions and increase severity 
  • Students frequently do not report it, fearing device removal or escalation 

Worth noting: Students often disclose distress indirectly, through search behaviour, written work, or offhand comments, long before they disclose it directly to an adult. 

4. Screen Time, Sleep, and Attention 

The concern with screen time is less about a specific number of hours and more about what those hours may displace, particularly sleep.

  • Sleep: The impact on sleep is particularly well documented. 90% of studies included in a review of youth screen use found an association between screen media use and delayed bedtime and/or decreased total sleep time.
  • Attention: Screen use and attention are closely connected, but the relationship is complex. One study of preschool children found that those using screens for more than two hours per day were 5.9 times more likely to have clinically significant inattention problems compared with children using screens for less than 30 minutes per day.
  • Physical activity: Screen time can also displace time spent moving. Recent Canadian data found that only 20.8% of Canadian youth aged 12–17 met the recommended 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day, while just 27.8% met the recreational screen-time recommendation.
  • In-person connection: Digital interaction can complement real-world relationships, but it can also compete with face-to-face time. Research involving 3,461 children aged 8–12 found that patterns of media use and media multitasking were associated with measures of social wellbeing and face-to-face communication.

5. Exposure to Harmful Online Content 

Some of the most serious risks are not sought out at all. They are encountered. More than 300 million children are estimated to be victims of online sexual exploitation and abuse every year, highlighting the scale of harmful content and interactions children can encounter online.

  • Content promoting self-harm, disordered eating, or substance misuse 
  • Violent, graphic, or extremist material 
  • Sexually explicit content, including material encountered accidentally 
  • Hate speech and targeted harassment communities 
  • Grooming and exploitation attempts through gaming platforms and messaging apps 
  • Scams, phishing, and malware that also compromise student data 

A student researching a legitimate history assignment can land on extremist propaganda. A student searching for help with body image can be served content that makes things measurably worse. 

Building a Safe Digital Learning Environment 

A workable approach usually has four connected layers. 

Layer 1: Clear, Shared Policy 

  • Acceptable use agreements written in language students understand 
  • Transparency with families about what is filtered, what is monitored, and why 
  • Defined escalation pathways so staff know exactly who does what when a concern is flagged.

Layer 2: Education and Digital Citizenship 

  • Teaching students to recognize manipulation, misinformation, and algorithmic pressure 
  • Normalizing help-seeking so reporting does not feel like betrayal 
  • Building critical habits rather than relying only on restriction 

Layer 3: Human Support 

  • Accessible counsellors and clear referral routes 
  • Staff trained to recognize early warning signs 
  • Genuine partnership with parents and carers 
  • Peer support and mentoring structures 

Layer 4: Technology 

  • Filtering that reduces exposure to harmful material across school devices and networks 
  • Monitoring and alerting that surfaces potential risk indicators early 
  • Reporting that helps leadership see patterns rather than isolated incidents 
  • Consistent protection whether a device is on campus or at home 

Technology Is a Layer, Not a Replacement 

This point deserves to be stated plainly, because it is easy to get wrong in both directions. 

No filtering platform has ever comforted a frightened student. Only a person can respond to it with judgement, context, and care.

  • Reduce accidental exposure to harmful material 
  • Provide earlier visibility of potential risk indicators 
  • Help schools meet regulatory obligations such as CIPA and KCSiE
  • Extend consistent protection to devices used off campus

  • Diagnose a mental health condition
